Computer Information Systems Careers

As society grows increasingly dependent on technology, the job market's demand for computer-savvy workers has exploded. Information technology jobs and computers jobs are among the most lucrative and most plentiful in the workforce. A computer science degree can prepare graduates for careers like programming, software design, and systems engineering. A summary of information technology careers follows.

About the Field

Fundamentally, computer jobs use technology to help organizations and people become more effective and efficient. Information technology jobs are as diverse as they are dynamic. Some computer careers focus on software issues, such as designing and managing various applications. Other information technology careers concentrate on how to store and organize data with electronic databases. Alternatively, many computer science graduates choose to focus on the business aspect of technology by beginning a career in computer information systems (CIS) or management information systems (MIS). These careers utilize technology to develop business plans, establish networks, and safeguard an organization's electronic security.

Career Possibilities

The kinds of jobs available to those trained in computer science are innumerable. For example, if you have an interest in engineering and computer jobs, you could choose a career in systems engineering or software engineering and database technologies. On the other hand, if you're more interested in information technology jobs in the business world, you might pursue a career as a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) at a major corporation or as a computer and information systems manager for an accounting firm.

Education and Credentialing

According to the Department of Labor, roughly 80 percent of employees in computer-related jobs have a bachelor's degree or higher. Some computer jobs are open to people with two-year degrees, such as web design or tech support, but most require a four-year degree in computer science. The best information technology jobs are reserved for candidates with master's degrees in computer science. Recently, more and more employers are looking for candidates with computer science backgrounds who also have an MBA in information systems or a related field.

Certification in information technology jobs is largely voluntary. However, workers with certain certifications will have a competitive advantage over those without the same credentials. These certifications are usually product-specific, meaning they are issued by a software company rather than an independent organization. For instance, a database administrator may obtain his/her qualifications by getting a certification in database management with a specific package of software.
